We've recently had an incident where a member was involved in an accident during a training session. Accidents can & will always happen, it's a fact of life despite what some H&S people may have us all believe! However, we can all make steps into minimising the risks and chances of being involved in incidents, especially when running on roads at night, & when the weather is poor. Therefore, although it's something that has been mentioned before, can I take this opportunity to stress that it is in your own interests & the interests of everyone running around you that you are as visible as possible on training nights. That means wearing bright colours as a minimum, and preferably hi-viz clothing or a vest. Feel free to add to this minimum requirement by wearing flashing armbands, headtorches or flashing amber beacons & searchlights!! It won't prevent an accident, it certainly didn't in the recent incident, but at least it gives you a fighting chance - remember, when & where we train at winter is at a time when the roads are still busy, people aren't necessarily concentrating where they're driving & aren't looking for 30 nutters crossing near them!! So please - Stay Visible, & ensure those around you are too!! Happy & safe running. |
