Trawden Trio Triumphs
Good to back racing after the Easter break and at long last it seemed to have warmed up as we made our way over to Catforth for the 7 mile road race.
Derrick Marsh elected to make his own way there after previous failures to bring travel Scrabble on recent forays on the local 10K scene. Also, I don't think he's too keen on watching the early morning sunrise, but it always pays to be early and get a good parking spot as a base to get ready for the race.
Really nice location for this race from the local village hall at Catforth but with a different start from the regular 10K event held here. Wallace, Derrick and I made our way up to the start away from the village hall, awaited the pre-race instructions, and we were off at 10am prompt.
Not too big a field for this race but still a respectable number given the weather. Yes, it had warmed up, but we were still being battered with a strong wind and a hint of rain. We made our past the village hall and connected up with the 10K course at the end of the village before heading out into the local countryside.
Very flat course this one and for the first two miles the wind was behind us which in return was giving me sub 6 minute miles, well into PB timings for myself. But at three miles we made the turn back and then started to realise how strong the wind was and with that, times per mile were creeping up but I was still on for a PB.
By the 5 mile marker I had managed to get myself into third position and was looking good. There are a couple of hilly bridges to go over before the last mile which take a bit out the legs.
But with the 6 mile marker and the wind behind again we pushed on as the village hall and the finish line approached. My lungs were screaming at me for the last mile but gave it my all and crossed the line with a new PB and also a fourth position overall.
Next in was was Wallace with a new PB as well, with Derrick not too far behind. On into the hall after the race for a well earned bacon butty and brews all round.
New PBs for both "Wallace and Gromit" for 7 mile distance and also Derrick and I won the first V50 and V40 respectively, with a bottle of wine each for our endeavours.
Not the best of weather on the day with strong winds and heavy rain at times, but still a good event and course and nice location and course to run if you get the chance.
