Brathay Windermere Marathon

SSSssshhhh, don't tell anyone, but this is a great marathon to do! Sunday morning, late May, the weather's bound to be gorgeous, great scenery, what more could you want??? Well actually it was late May, the scenery was great, the weather however came from February! Howling winds & driving rain / hail greeted all the runners as we assembled on the lawn outside Brathay Hall for a pre race briefing. We were going to get moist as they say! However, 10.15 arrived, the drummers struck up and led us down the drive to the start line. The rain stopped, the wind calmed, it was a miracle! (well, not quite but you get my drift!) The marathon starts and finishes at Brathay Hall, Clappersgate (just outside Ambleside) and basically runs an anticlockwise loop around the lake. Whilst not "properly hilly" it is constantly undulating with hardly any flat bits at all. A really well organised event with brilliant support. As usual Paul Brown was first one home for Trawden, clocking a PB of 3.07.46 in the process (time to start handicapping I reckon!), and finishing 29th overall. Well done Paul!! Jim Garside had a great first half but then suffered a little on the second half, crossing the line second for us in 3.15.16, not a bad time for someone suffering!! I'd like to say I chased Jim to the line, but I'd be lying, so instead I'll say I had one of my better marathons, bagging a PB of 3.18.46, I even managed my new acrobatic trademark of a kids forward roll over the line - must have been the beer in the Royal Oak on Saturday! Dave Lord crossed the line next in 3.28.46, looking like he had another one in him if required! Tony Hall finished next in 3.30.24, a great run only five weeks after the London marathon. Dean Ralphson was pleased to see the end of his first road marathon, clocking a PB by definition of 3.41.01. To be fair it's only 9 miles further than he's ever run on the road before, don't know what the problem is! I was nearly in the dog house, telling people Sandra wouldn't be in until 4.15'ish as she's been struggling with her calf recently. Oops, she was back in 4.04.54 - good job we didn't go for a sneaky beer! Well done San. Another good day out for Trawden, & I'm awaiting confirmation at present, but it looks like we won the 1st team award too, shame non us thought anything of it & hung around otherwise we'd know for sure!
