Lynne Rich Memorial Syke Race

DARREN HORNER 28 MAY 2013

Fog triumphs with a prized pink hat and Penguin rises and falls to earth with a bump!

We like the Andy O'Sullivan races as their proceeds always go to a good cause, this year it's to raise money for a Mobile Chemotherapy Unit for the Christie. I do belive they have managed to raise over £3000 which in fairness is a really good achivement, but they do need to raise a total of £9000, so still some way to go.

We did a little warm up as the race starts outside the Red Lion pub in Whitworth. We jogged from the start, up the lane past the golf course and around Brownhouse Wham Reservoir.

The race itself does two laps of the reservior making it a total of 5K. We then returned to the start/finish area jogging down the hill, where we got ready for the start of the race and the usual suspects lined up.

For some reason I was right at the front - oh I do remember those days, being able to keep up and push the pace - these days it's watch everyone fly past. Well...erm...not quite as Fog started at the back!

Andy shouted "3, 2, 1 GO!"

From first to second to third down to 12th by the top of the hill, which I expected, after all being only 2' 6" tall and covered in feathers does have its disadvantages! We cracked on over the tops where I started to pick a few runners off, going from 12th up to 6th. I only lost one place around the reservior loops to finish in 7th.

Fog had a more frightful race. Now highland cattle roam these moors quite happily and Fog is rather scared of these cows! So after running round the reserviors one of the cows walked onto the path in front of her where she had to make a diversion to get round it, in the process losing a little time.

Overall though we both enjoyed our outing, these little short races are ideal tune ups for bigger things to come

Next race: Ian Terry Memorial 5K Road Race at 7pm Tuesday on 16th July from the Falcon Inn, Littleborough. All proceeds to Care of Police Survivors.
