Who let the dogs out!

Gromit and Preston (aka Mark Fawcett) picked up the ever race-ready Wallace, plus the ever tangerine and still Blackpool FC's biggest fan, Ashley Eastwood, for the trip over the Yorkshire border for the Bentham Beagles 10K Bash. We picked this race as it was one that we all hadn't done before so the route would be an unknown for all of us.

Cracking drive deep into the Yorkshire Dales as we made our way to Bentham and the sports field which was HQ for this event. Once there we bumped into fellow Humbugs Adam and David Howard.

I must say this is a really nice location for a 10K with some quite stunning scenery surrounding the sleepy little village of Bentham. After talking to Adam and some other fellow runners it was becoming quite apparent that this race would neither be flat nor one for a PB. In fact one runner did say to give this 10K the upmost respect once past the two mile point and the left turn at the Punch Bowl pub.

Usual pre-race build, collection of numbers and warm up before we went to line up for the start at bottom of a very steep hill. The race director sent us on our way and we were off for a steep climb up to the hill to the main road - at least it wasn't a Zulu charge as would be the case if it had started at the top!

We were soon at the top of the hill and onto the main road for a nice slow decent to the two mile point and the left turn at the pub, and this was indeed where the race got tough. From here it's a long slog with some brief moments of slight descent and little bits of flat to get your legs back before you carry on the climb up to five miles.

There is some cracking scenery as you climb up but it's more of a case of head down and grind out the climb. But at long last there's relief as both the 5-mile marker and a marshal signalled a left turn for a very steep and fast run to the finish from where we had previously started.

I can't say enough about this event. Sure it's tough and a challenge but well worth the drive over, and the Bentham Beagles club really did make us feel welcome too with some awesome refreshments laid on.

The Humbugs took quite a few prizes too with Gromit, Preston and Adam Howard taking the men's team prize and also vet category prizes for both Wallace and Preston too.

A fantastic day out, brilliant results for all who ran and some great fish and chips in Settle on the way home. Come back for this one next year? You bet!
