A bottle of trail ale, free digital race photos, junior races, pre and post race massages for just a fiver, ice cream truck on site, a shed load of prizes, chip butties at the presentation and tables full of free home-made cakes, flapjacks and buns.  If Carlsberg did races…

But before we get to the recap of the race of the year, I kicked off the weekend with the usual trip to Burnley parkrun.  However, lately I’ve been using parkruns purely as a social outing and as a bit of a recovery run.  But this week I wanted to have a blast round and see if I could swag a PB.  Mission accomplished!  My best time on that particular course is now 21:13, although I’m hopeful I might be able to shave that time down a bit yet :-)

Thursday soon swung round and that meant is was time for race number nine of the Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix.  It was another fast and furious 5K at Todmorden.  It was a tad windy and the small course was pretty crowded so I was unsure if I could go sub-20 again.  But I gave it everything I had and was rewarded with a shiny new PB of 19:49 - result!  Trawden AC’s performance as a team was also good enough to win us the ladies’ team prize – more booze!

But the real event came on Sunday – the Trawden 7 Trail race.  It was race number ten of the series and we were determined it was going to be the best and most welcoming race yet!  The club had a core group of dedicated and incredibly enthusiastic race organisers who have been working immensely hard over the last few months, and their efforts really did show on Sunday.

The inaugural junior races were a huge success with over seventy smiling, happy kids running about on the fields, proudly showing off their medals and eating as many sweets as they could.  I was so proud of them!

And then it was time for the main event – the senior race.  Over 150 runners from all over the county huddled together on the start line, preparing ourselves for what was to come.  There would be tarmac, trails, big hills, little hills, tricky terrain, loose rocks, streams and bridges.  We couldn’t wait to get going! Hurry, I want a bottle of trail ale! We had a few club members out on the course with their cameras (see photos below.

What a race!  I really enjoyed myself, even on the trickier terrain.  I knocked a good three and a half minutes off last year’s time and enjoyed some cracking company all the way around the course.  I worked my arse off and finished 2nd lady, which I was overjoyed with!  The fantastic Trawden ladies all had superb runs and yet again we snagged the team prize.  Even more booze!

I’m not sure how the race committee can top this one, but we’ll soon find out as the next Trawden race is happening next month at Boulsworth. Can’t wait to see what they have in store!
