Trawden Athletic Club hosts two regular annual races - the Trawden 7 and Boulsworth Fell - and in 2011 launched the inaugural club Mini Series coinciding with five of the main Pendle & Burnley GP races. You can read more about these races and check the Mini Series results and tables on this page.

The Trawden 7 has been part of the Pendle & Burnley Grand Prix series for many years. The route is mainly on road with a short trail section midway. Upon leaving Trawden recreational ground, you turn left then right along Keighley Road and drop down to Laneshawbridge. Turn right at the main T-junction and head uphill past Lower Emmott farm where there's a brief respite before the main long climb to the old Herders Inn begins in earnest. You're certain to work up a sweat as you make your way up the road, and the short dip after the derelict pub is a welcome relief. At the corner south of Combe Hill divert right to join the Bronte Way for the fast off-road part of the race, dropping rapidly before making a right turn through fields following Smithy Clough. You pass Parson's Lee farm an join a wider section of bridleway leading to a scenic stretch through Wycoller village. Make sure you've kept a bit in reserve for the last mile of road beyond Wycoller and back to the finish as it's deceptively uphill most of the way!

Boulsworth Fell Race was resurrected in 2010 after a few years' absence. The present route differs slightly from that used in previous incarnations, and there is a short section that passes over private ground (which must not be used on recce runs prior to the event). The route passes through farmland on the way to and back from the foot of Boulsworth, with the middle section consisting of a clockwise loop over the summit utilising the concessionary footpath, which provides an opportunity for some proper muddy Pennine fell running!

The race coincides with the popular Trawden Agricultural Show and has a grandstand finish in the heart of the main show ground. There's a great post-race atmosphere with a selection of homemade treats on offer while awaiting the presentation of awards. Race entry also includes free access to Trawden Show.

The Pendle & Burnley Grand Prix Races are well supported by Trawden runners so we thought we would add a bit of extra interest by running our own club mini series alongside the main GP. The mini series will include the following five races:

DATE TIME RACE TYPE DISTANCE ASCENT LINK
6th May 2011 7.00pm Pinhaw Fell 5.1 miles 750 feet Report
27th May 2011 7.00pm Burnley Lions 10K (Colne) Road 10 km 450 feet Report
19th June 2011 11.00am Hendon Brook Half Marathon Road 13.5 miles 1700 feet Report
26th June 2011 11.00am Trawden 7 Road/Trail 7 miles 600 feet Report
14th August 2011 10.30am Boulsworth Fell 7.5 miles 1400 feet Report

Four races will count towards the overall scores and you will be awarded points based on your race position in relation to other Trawden runners (in the same way as the GP scoring works).

First Trawden man to finish each race will receive 50 points, second man 49 points, third 48 points, and so on. First lady home in each race will receive 30 points, second lady 29 points, third 28 points, etc. Ladies receive fewer points per race purely because there aren't as many female runners in the club and we will maintain separate results tables for ladies and men (as well as awarding male and female prizes).

Besides the standard points scored per race, everyone who takes part in Hendon Brook will get an extra 10 points (5 for ladies), irrespective of whether or not this is one of your four counting races, in recognition of the toughness of this race! The points tables will be updated as soon as possible after each race (see right).

Prizes will be awarded at the annual Christmas Party in the following categories:

  • First male and female runners
  • Most improved male and female runner
  • Best single race performance

We hope the Mini Series will be a regular and enjoyable addition to the Trawden race calendar and perhaps stir up a bit of friendly intra-club competition. Good luck to all!
