Crazy Cow 10K

DERRICK MARSH 3 JUN 2014
News Details

Wallace, Preston, Adam, Graham and I set off on a bright morning to Preston for the Crazy Cow 10K, though after the weekend's other races one or two of us weren't that keen on running.

Adam set up his state-of-the-art sat nav in the car then chose to ignore it when we got to Preston and drove past our destination! After doing a turn in the road and backtracking we finally arrived at the start. Onto registration and already we had problems, Wallace and Preston's registrations had gone missing so they have to pay again, not having any proof of entering in the first place.

Anyway, once all was sorted we went back to the car to get changed and warm up where we met the Emma (Adam's new love) who also does a bit of running and is entering the race too. After the usual team photos and persistent spraying of WD40 on Wallace's knees, we made our way to the start. I bumped into the usual faces and get asked the usual questions, then came the usual safety instructions and were off.

Take it easy Derrick, I'm thinking, but then I saw a gap and decided to up the gears. I will never learn! Lovely run on trail and track alongside the river and I felt very comfortable 7.5 minute miling, until the sun and heat took affect and the run started to turn into a slog. I still managed to keep the same pace, but round about the 7K point I crossed a bridge and had a sneaky look behind only to see Adam breathing down my neck who said "Well done Derrick."

My legs wouldn't move any faster so I just maintained the same pace expecting him to run past at any minute, but it never happened and he actually said I opened up again, but as we got to the last 100 yards Adam decided to make his move and past came another Wallace! I did almost overtake him again but I ran out of race, the lady marshal saying slow down so she could read numbers and form a queue.

No medal this time but a cow bell of all things! We stayed and cheered all the other runners in and waited for Emma, then it was back to the car for a quick change with burger, chips and a pint on the agenda. At prize giving Wallace got V50 - well done! We thought there would have been a team prize but the organiser said we don't have a team - someone give him a calculator! Anyhow, no worries…

A delightful race, flat course but lots of stiles and turns in it, we all agreed at the end not a PB course because of all the twist and turns but nonetheless is a good race to run and we will be back next year.
