After our maiden marathon in Dublin it was a return to the local racing scene for the Preston 10 miler. Good early outset for this one as it was a 10am start from Hutton Grammar school near Preston.

In tow was fellow teammate Mark Fawcett as we arrived nice and early and parked up at the HQ to collect our race numbers. Well over 500 runners were listed so there promised to be quite a big field lining up for the start.

Ideal running weather on the day as it was overcast, not too cold and there wasn’t even a hint of a breeze. With the promise of a flat course and fast PBs, we prepared and warmed up before the off.

We bumped into fellow TAC runners Adam Howard and Pete Baistow during the warm up making it a good turnout for the Humbug army, and we made our way to the start a little walk away from the school.

Usual pre-race instructions and we were off. Not a lot you could really say about the race route for this one apart from it is pretty much flat with just a few gentle rises here and there. Plus the course is a two lap event, and I’m not really a big fan off of multi-lap races.

It’s a quick start from the grammar school out through Longton village and around onto the bypass for a long straight fast run before turning left and repeating the route again.

Think I am still benefiting from post marathon training and I did have a finish time for this one which would require me to maintain regular 6:15 miles. Thankfully, due to both the course and conditions, I managed to maintain this to the end and take a full minute of my previous best for this distance.

The race did go really quick and there were some nice long straights were you could open up a little and get a nice rhythm going to maybe regain some time, especially on the long run down the bypass.

Great runs too from Mark, Adam and Wallace with new PBs from these fellow Humbugs too. It’s maybe not the most scenic of courses and, yes, it’s two laps, but if you get the weather it’s one to come to for a possible PB. Well organized and well marshalled with plenty of drink stations in the right places.

Great day out and it’s good to be back on the local race scene and meet up with fellow TAC runners and some other regular faces too.
