The absolute beast that nearly destroyed me!

JOHN WHITESIDE 2 JUN 2016

Oh my god, you absolute beast, I swear it nearly destroyed me, don't ever underestimate them races up in the Lakes!

Turned up on the day in plenty of time to catch Andrew Braithwaite in campervan on bacon butties, I declined the offer of one as not good preparation for 15 miles up mountains, however little did I realise that later that day I would regret it.

So at 12 noon we got to the start line with temperatures soaring. How much water to take was an issue so I decided on two 50ml sachet things, two gels and handful of raisins. Hmmmm...

After some road running you start on your first climb. Not knowing the route I really didn't know what to expect, and after 7-ish miles of going up and down you finally reach the summit of Helvellyn, turn round and head back same way you came.

At this point I was still feeling reasonably alright with one gel left and probably a mouth full of water. But with four miles left I'd gone, head first, then legs, then the will to live. I kid you not these were the most painful four miles I've ever done!

As you get to the final descent back into Keswick (bacon butty regret here) you can see where you need to be, although I didn't think I'd ever get there.

I've never been so glad to get to a finish line. On saying all that the scenery was absolutely breathtaking and is the reason why we are fell runners.

I will do it again, maybe better prepared next time.
